President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa this Thursday afternoon took part in a conference held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on sustainable development and quality education. The initiative was organized by Education for All together with the United Nations ahead of the debut of the Portugal national football team at the World Cup in Qatar.
Marcelo reinforced the idea that it is important for quality education to be extended to all citizens, and there has also been a significant increase in access to higher education, similar to what has happened in Portugal in recent years. In Portugal, women currently make up the majority in higher education, including doctoral degrees.
In addition to women, the President of the Portuguese Republic argues that education should be easily accessible to all social strata, national and non-civil, including migrants and their families, as can be read in a note on the participation of the President of the Republic in this Thursday’s conference in Doha, published on the website of the President of the Republic.
“Education quality means freedom and inclusiveness, tolerance, non-discrimination, namely on the basis of gender, ethnicity, origin, sexual orientation and, therefore, respect for human rights. Naturally, contributing to the reduction of inequality and the fight against poverty,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
According to the President, it is important for sustainable development and quality education to leave no one behind.
