Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho this Friday denounced a “disturbing” coup attempt that took place at dawn in Sao Tome and Principe, calling for “absolute respect by all of constitutional order.”
“I had contact with the Prime Minister of Sao Tome and at first everything seemed to be back to normal and that was good news. [mas] since then we have news of the deaths of some rebels,” said Joao Gomes Cravinho.
Speaking to Portuguese journalists in Brussels after a meeting of the Council of Foreign Affairs, the head of Portuguese diplomacy added: “I do not have final information on this issue, but naturally it is a matter of concern and we absolutely condemn any attempt to use violence to achieve political goals.” .
