“No one can shut us up, no one intimidates us”: Mariana Mortagua in her first speech to BE

This Sunday, Mariana Mortagua was elected as the new coordinator of the Esquerda Block (BE). In the closing speech of the XIII Party Congress and the first as the new leader of the BE, Mortagua emphasized the causes and struggles of the party, the goals achieved in the 24 years of the history of the BE, and left a sharp criticism of the PS Government.

The BE leader warned the party’s “opponents” that “they haven’t seen anything yet” and pointed out that the Blok “is and always will be a place of causes and beliefs”.

“To our opponents, for whom the left is always a doomed project, they already know us, but have not yet seen anything that we will know how to create, invent, build, unite,” he said.

In her acceptance speech shortly after the announcement of the results, Mariana Mortagua also ensured that over two decades of party history, 13 congresses so far, “this full room is just the beginning of BE”.

“No one can shut us up, no one intimidates us,” the new party leader assured, recalling the party’s struggle.

Combat PS

Mariana Mortagua took it upon herself to fight against the absolute majority of the PS, which she called “torment” and “a cause of national embarrassment” and warned that those who “crush this swamp” do not defend democracy.

“And we all know that PS voters are better than anyone else, as it has become clear in just over a year that the absolute majority is a torment of degradation and instability and a cause of national embarrassment,” Mariana Mortagua told the delegates of the XIII Convention.

To unceasing applause, in her first speech as BE coordinator, Mariana Mortagua set beacons for the party’s intervention in the next two years to “prevent this path of degradation from continuing.”

“Whoever stifles, downplays or devalues the swamp created by the absolute majority does not defend democracy, but removes responsibility from those who are responsible for weakening democracy,” he said.

Mariana Mortagua criticized the government of António Costa, which, in her opinion, suffers from the “vice” of “glorifying trump cards that are torment.”

“There is no worse vice in this government than the celebration of triumphs which are a torment to the people. Wages and pensions are lower, but the government asks you to be grateful for the budget surplus,” he criticized.

Being elected in Madeira and being the third political force in Europe

Mariana Mortagua has set herself the goal of having parliamentary representation in Madeira again this year and becoming the third political force in the 2024 European elections.

“It is this force that will go to the polls over the next few months, and we have two goals. The first is to raise in Madeira the opposition that Miguel Albuquerque fears, one that will not be silent in the face of these interests. which cover the PSD and PS of Madeira. An opposition that takes seriously the lives of Madeirans, poverty, housing, health. This opposition will be Roberto Almada’s strength in the Parliament of Madeira from October,” he said before a standing ovation, from the room.
