PSD MP Paula Cardoso on Monday advocated strengthening international means to prosecute perpetrators of sexual violence in conflict scenarios and using other types of punishment, such as economic sanctions, to ensure justice for victims.
Participating in a conference on the prevention of sexual violence in conflict, which began this Monday in London, the MP lamented the lack of “adequacy of international law in order to be able to respond to these crimes.”
While acknowledging that “sexual violence during the war phase cannot be treated as ordinary sexual violence as provided for in the domestic law of each state”, he regrets that international courts have been “very slow” to respond.
