The National Police Union announced daily protests at Lisbon and Porto airports from 31 July to 6 August, World Youth Day, due to a “lack of response to the problems”.
The Union of the National Police (Sinapol) said in a statement that it will carry out various protest actions daily from July 31 to August 6, such as delivering leaflets at the airports of Lisbon and Porto, placing banners in various places in Lisbon. , especially in the area dedicated to World Youth Day (WYD) and leaflet distribution at tourist spots in Madeira and the Azores.
Considered the biggest event of the Catholic Church, WYD will take place from 1 to 6 August in Lisbon and is expected to be attended by about 1.5 million people.
Sinapol justifies the protests by “the government’s demonstrated and apparent lack of political will to address structural, statutory and police remuneration issues, even after several letters were sent to the guardianship authorities.”
“We are tired of waiting for the government, so it’s time for the police to fight back and show their opposition to the way they are being treated or, in this case, brutalized, fiercely and directly. It is completely irrational and absurd that the government continues to be unaware of the seriousness of the situation in which we are taking big steps towards the disappearance of the PSP, because it is more than obvious that at present there are few young people who want to pursue a profession that is not appreciated, that is badly paid “, – stresses the Syndicate.
