IPMA raises warning to orange in six areas due to heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms

The areas of Viseu, Guarda, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco and Coimbra are under an orange warning for precipitation and thunderstorms until 21:00 this Friday, with occasional heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms expected, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Environment said. , Atmosphere (IPMA).

“Locally heavy showers, sometimes with hail and thunder,” IPMA said of an orange precipitation warning for these six areas of the Portuguese mainland following a new weather warning update.

IPMA has updated the yellow warnings it issued this morning, upgrading the six areas to orange precipitation and thunderstorm warnings, while Faro’s orange warnings are only for expected thunderstorms.

Thus, in these six areas, the orange warning is valid from 13:48 to 21:00.

The IPMA update now also places the Lisbon area on an “inland area” yellow precipitation warning, forecasting local heavy rainfall, occasional hail, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, until 21:00.

In addition to Lisbon, the districts of Bragança, Faro, Évora, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém and Portalegre remain on a yellow warning for heavy rainfall, sometimes with hail and thunderstorms, until 21:00 this Friday.

The Aveiro area also appears in the new IPMA update, where a yellow warning is also applied from 14:20 to 21:00 due to occasional heavy precipitation and thunderstorms.

An orange alert is issued by IPMA when there is a meteorological situation of moderate to high risk.
