Parliament approves the diploma, which ends with an insurance couplet on the glass of the car. The proposal stems from a bill submitted by the Liberal Initiative.

Parliament approved this Friday, in a final global vote, a proposal that removes the obligation to display an auto insurance sign on a car window, as well as the penalties associated with not posting it.

The proposal, which was the result of a bill introduced by the Liberal Initiative, was approved with positive votes from PS, PCP and BE, as well as the initiator, PSD abstaining and voting against Chega.

In a statement on the reasons for this initiative, IL stressed: “In the historical context of severe financial restrictions, we do not consider it proportionate or justified that the state charges hundreds of euros just for forgetting a simple paper that conveys only information that is already in the possession of someone who fines”, which justifies the abolition of articles of legislation that currently oblige motorists to display an insurance sign, as well as the corresponding fines.

The final text, approved this Friday, adds several clauses to an article in the law defining the rules for issuing insurance documents, provided that these documents can be issued and provided by electronic means, “without prejudice to their issuance and availability.” on paper at no additional cost at the request of the policyholder or, where appropriate, the insured person, or in cases where they clearly do not have the appropriate electronic means for their safe transmission and reception.

These documents, issued electronically, “replace the paper insurance certificate.”
