Augusto Santos Silva warns oceans are ‘wealth in danger’

The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, warned this Thursday that the oceans are “wealth in danger” and called for the mobilization of “the entire international community in support” of the cause.

In a video posted on his Twitter account for World Oceans Day this Thursday, Augusto Santos Silva emphasized that the ocean is “great wealth”.

“He has resources, food, he creates jobs, he creates wealth, but the wealth of all of us is at risk,” he warned.

According to the President of Parliament, the oceans are in danger “because of pollution, loss of biodiversity, because of the many factors that disrupt maritime mobility, impede trade.”

“That is why we must mobilize everyone, as an international community, for the ocean,” he urged.

Santos Silva believes that Portugal “has been at the forefront of the international agenda for the oceans,” recalling the United Nations (UN) Oceans Conference hosted in Lisbon last year.

“The Portuguese owe a lot for the world’s renewed focus on the oceans: Mario Soares, Mario Ruiva and now United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. This is a task for all of us, which we must all consider as our own,” he stressed.

World Oceans Day this Thursday aims to raise awareness of the benefits of the oceans and the need to protect them and use their resources sustainably.

This date was set by the UN in 2008, although many countries have celebrated the date since 1992, following the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro.
