Authorities said on Friday that the PSP had fined 24 bike and scooter drivers in a seven-day nationwide operation to enforce traffic rules for this type of vehicle.
The Public Security Police said in a statement that they monitored 1,114 drivers, 723 of whom were on bicycles, 340 on scooters and 51 others, as part of Operation Security Active Mobility, which ran from May 30 to June 5. vehicles equivalent to bicycles.
During this inspection, the PSP adds, 24 administrative offenses were registered against bicycle and scooter drivers, namely, failure to observe a red traffic light, incorrect positioning of a march, using a mobile phone while driving, and using headphones.
The PSP highlights that the trend towards greater use of bicycles and scooters “raises questions regarding road safety as their drivers share lanes with other users, whether pedestrians or other vehicles, namely cars.”
The police say the operation, carried out in the area of responsibility of the PSP, in urban agglomerations, was aimed at “strengthening the verification of bicycle and scooter drivers”, contributing to “a general clarification to the public about the rules for driving this type of vehicle”, user awareness and “suppression of behavior related to with an increased risk that leads to serious accidents.
The operation was part of the World Bicycle Day celebration on June 3rd.
