Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned as a member of the British Parliament on Friday with immediate effect.
“It is very sad to leave Parliament, at least for now,” Johnson said in a statement quoted by Reuters. “I’m being pushed out by a small group of people with no evidence to support their claims and without the approval of members of the Conservative Party, let alone the wider electorate.”
At stake, according to the news agency, is the “Partygate” case, linked to photographs of the former prime minister partying during Covid-19-imposed lockdown.
Boris Johnson said he received a letter from the committee investigating the scandal, and it clearly states that they were trying to use the case to expel him from parliament.
“I am very sorry to leave my wonderful constituency. It was a great honor for me to serve you as Mayor and Deputy Mayor,” the former Prime Minister emphasized.
