The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, congratulated four citizens this Sunday on their election to the municipal councils of Luxembourg, considering that they have demonstrated “the importance, democratic participation and civic commitment of the Portuguese-Luxembourg community”.
“The President of the Republic congratulates Kevin de Oliveira, José Vas Río, Lui Pinto and Antonio da Costa Araujo, who received the most votes in their respective communes, in the local elections this Sunday in Luxembourg, thus demonstrating the importance, democratic participation and civic commitment of the Portuguese-Luxembourgish community,” reads a message posted on the official website of the Presidium of the Republic on the Internet.
This Sunday, local elections were held in Luxembourg.
In March, the President of the Republic and Prime Minister António Costa were in Luxembourg to meet with their counterparts in that country and for a meeting with the Portuguese community, where they left calls for participation in the elections.
Luxembourg is the country with the largest Portuguese community abroad, constituting 14.5% of the total population and almost a third of the foreign population.
The number of Portuguese people who emigrated to Luxembourg has decreased in 2022, according to data from the country’s Statistics Portal released by the Emigration Observatory in April.
This data shows that 3,633 Portuguese entered Luxembourg last year (6.5% less than the previous year).
In 2022, Luxembourg received 31,433 foreigners, of which 11.6% were Portuguese.
Despite the decline, Portugal continues to be the main source of immigration to Luxembourg, emphasizes the Emigration Observatory, an independent technical and research structure integrated into the Center for Studies and Research in Sociology (CIES) ISCTE, Instituto Universitário de Lisbon. .
