This Wednesday, the chief executive of the National Health Service (SNS) urged people to use the Linha Saúde 24 in case of acute illness, insisting that it should always be the gateway to the public health service.
“In case of acute illness, call SNS24. All the information is there (…), it is a matter of literacy,” said Fernando Araujo, who was heard this Wednesday at the Parliamentary Commission on Health at the request of the PKP. on the closure of maternity hospitals in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley.
The SNS chief executive insisted that SNS line 24 “should be the gateway” to the system and should always be “the first contact to be made with health”.
“Not only during childbirth, but in general with acute diseases,” he added.
On the question of safe birth in SNS – Summer Seasonal Plan 2023, which provides for the closure of the maternity wards of the Santa Maria (Lisbon) and Caldas da Rainha hospitals for work in the summer and until September 27 from 41 maternity hospitals. the country’s hospitals continue to operate at full capacity, Fernando Araujo said that since he began work, this plan has worked without failure.
“There were more births in SNS in 2023. In the area of Lisbon and the Tagus valley, more were born every day,” the official said, adding that the plan was carried out “without problems” and on schedule.
“In 23 weeks, there has been no unplanned closure of any maternity hospital in the country,” he insisted, emphasizing the importance of predictability, safety and confidence in the response.
He also said that the evaluation of the plan is positive and that it should be maintained “prudently and cautiously” in the summer, followed by an evaluation at the end of the year.
Fernando Araujo highlighted the “generosity of medical professionals” so that all scales could be realized and highlighted the networking that has been done in this area in SNS.
The official said that in this area, the plan is being implemented “in two phases”: one short-term with “temporary approaches” to avoid closures in facilities “relevant to the provision of medical care, especially in areas where there are no offers, and another medium-term, which includes measures to engage social media professionals, such as career revision, investment in equipment, and greater synergies between primary and hospital care.
“It is safe to be born on social media. This is not an accident, this is the result of the work and efforts of many professionals who need to continue to create conditions for the continuation of work,” he said.
