This memorial is the work of Infraestruturas de Portugal, built in the Municipality of Pedrogan Grande, District of Leiria, by the architect Souto Moura, and which was already opened to the public on Thursday 15 June without any official ceremony.
In a note published on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet, the head of state notes that he “learned from the media about the opening ceremony on June 27 of a monument in honor of the victims of the 2017 fires in Bolshoy Pedrogane.”
“As you know, on this day the President of the Republic will be in Italy for a meeting of Cotec Europe together with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and King Felipe VI of Spain, which will end in the afternoon. it is not possible to return to Portugal before the end of the same period,” the same note said.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa adds that “he has already announced that he intends to visit later this month the region affected by the terrible fires of six years ago” in which more than a hundred people died.
On Tuesday, the chairman of the city council of Leiria and the inter-municipal community of the region of Leiria, Gonçalo López, told the Lusa news agency that the official ceremony was scheduled for June 27 at 5:00 pm, which he called canceled. actually the inauguration, because the monument is already open”, but “exit ceremony”.
