The prime minister acknowledged this Thursday that the European agreement reached in early June on new asylum rules “is not an agreement that does credit to Europe”, but acknowledged that it is better than a complete lack of understanding.
During preparatory debates in the European Council on June 29 and 30, António Costa was questioned about this by several courts, including Chegoy, who questioned whether the agreement provides for financial compensation of 20,000 euros for each non-relocated asylum seeker.
“They ask themselves if the agreement is satisfactory. It’s an agreement that I don’t like, but it’s better to have one than to have no agreement at all. This is not an agreement that does credit to Europe, that it would be an honor to approve a migration pact without these conditions and without any doubt about what is the responsibility of the countries of the European Union,” Costa defended.
The prime minister turned to Deputy Bruno Nunez of Chega: “I’m talking to you, yes,” accusing him of being “too nervous and too nervous” to question the payment of this financial compensation.
“It was the condition of the countries defending the migration policy defended by the deputy that they demanded an end to the blocking of the migration pact. They paid 20,000 euros for not fulfilling their duty to receive refugees,” he criticized.
In early June, EU member states voted by majority to approve an agreement to reform asylum rules at a meeting in Luxembourg between 27 ministers responsible for migration.
The agreement became possible only after Italy lifted its reservations on the conditions for the deportation of migrants without the right to asylum arriving in the EU. Hungary and Poland voted against the agreement, while Bulgaria, Malta, Slovakia and Lithuania abstained.
Financial compensation in the amount of 20,000 euros is provided for each non-relocated asylum seeker.
The EU provides for the resettlement of 30,000 migrants per year and a contribution of 660 million euros to a fund intended to finance migration policy.
