The leader of the Liberal Initiative considered this Friday that cuts in income support, which he categorized as “wrapped” and “lack of transparency,” violated expectations, and urged the government to deliver on what it promised.
“What we have is a violation of the expectations that have been created for the people who will benefit from this support, and perhaps more than a violation of expectations, a violation of the law,” said Rui Rocha from Batalha, Leiria District. , given that this is “another one of those cases where the government gets into a quandary because it’s not transparent with the Portuguese”.

On the 31st, the Secretary of State for Tax Affairs signed an order that would change the rules contained in the government’s ordinance assigning this income support, prompting critical protests from the Left Bloc, PKP, SDP and Chega. .
The Decree-Law establishing the rules for attributing rental support states that the annual income to be taken into account is the “total income for determining the rate calculated by the tax authority”, that is, the taxable amount.
However, the May 31 order bases this support on gross income—taxable income plus specific deductions—added to other income taxed at special rates, such as alimony or capital gains.
“What we see, no matter what position you take on the support itself, is the existence of legislation that had a certain scope and which the Government now wants to limit by its order. (…) The Government probably found that what was promised cost more than it was supposed to,” he added.
In the words of the IL leader, “It is unacceptable that a law be made there that does not take into account the costs that this law will entail, and that an attempt is now being made by order to limit the operation of this law. .
According to Rui Rocha, “irrespective of the rest, if an obligation has been made, a law has been passed guaranteeing certain obligations to the Portuguese and to the beneficiaries, what needs to be done is to fulfill this obligation.”
Rui Rocha insisted that the government should “take on the expectations it has created and live up to what the expectations have been created”.
“Everything else is a huge mess, a lack of transparency,” he repeated, accusing the socialist executive, led by António Costa, of being “systematic, day after day, on different topics,” deceiving those expectations.
“You can’t manage like that, you can’t systematically deceive the expectations of the Portuguese,” he added.
