Camara de Arcos de Valdeves investigates an accident that seriously injured a young woman.

The Chamber of Arcos de Valdeves is investigating the causes of an accident that occurred Thursday on a river beach in Valletta, which left a 15-year-old girl in critical condition, as announced this Friday.

On Thursday at around 4:30 pm, a 15-year-old girl was “sucked” through the gates of the Valeta dam, located next to the river beach, in the center of the village of Arcos de Valdeves, in the Viana do Castelo area.

The young woman suffered “serious head injuries” and was taken in “serious condition” to a hospital in São João in Porto, according to a source from Alto Miño’s sub-regional emergency and civil protection authority.

The young woman is in “critical but stable condition,” a source at the hospital told Lusa.

Speaking to Lusa, the mayor of Arcos de Valdeves in Viana do Castelo, João Manuel Esteves, said the municipality was “investigating the circumstances under which the accident occurred.”

“We are sorry about what happened. We immediately contacted the family. We are more concerned that the young woman is healthy and recovering,” he said.

The Social Democratic mayor announced that the swimming season on the beach of Valletta, in the center of the village, opens on Saturday. During the swimming season, the river beach is guarded by lifeguards.

Outside of the swimming season, according to João Manuel Estevez, “there is a sign forbidding swimming and jumping into the water, and there are buoys near the gates of the dam indicating that it is forbidden to cross this barrier.

The mayor added that Cámara de Arcos de Valdeves is responsible for managing the gateway and has entrusted its maintenance to the company.

Earlier in Lusa, GNR said it would send a record of the accident to the State Ministry (MP).

A source from the GNR Territorial Command in Viana do Castelo said that “the process of this incident is being completed and that it will be sent to Parliament within the 10-day legal deadline.”

This source said that the decision on the necessary measures to establish the causes of the accident will be decided by the deputy.
