ASAE seized over 2,500 food supplements in Lisbon and Porto.

The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) announced this Saturday that it has confiscated more than 2,500 units of nutritional supplements in the Lisbon and Porto regions for failing to comply with general mandatory consumer information requirements.

The confiscated units, with an approximate value of 20,000 euros, also contained substances not permitted by law, the agency said in a statement this Saturday.

According to the ASAE, the confiscation occurred as a result of an inspection operation following a complaint from INFARMED, the National Medicines and Health Products Administration.

“As a result, two criminal proceedings were opened on falsification of food products in connection with the addition of new prohibited ingredients and two proceedings on administrative offenses for non-compliance with mandatory consumer information,” the report says.

The authorities remind that they will continue “to develop inspection activities within their competence throughout the country in favor of healthy and fair competition between economic operators, in order to ensure food safety and consumer health.”

Economic operators involved in nutritional supplements and consumers can check the authorization of new substances in the European Union new product catalog “New Products Catalog”.
