A man died after the balloon he was piloting caught fire and crashed in Worcestershire, a county near Birmingham, England.
According to Sky News, the man was in his 20s and was pronounced dead at the scene following the accident, which happened around 6:20 am local time (the same time in Portugal) this Sunday.
Witnesses said they saw a fireball erupt from the balloon before it “fell like a rock” into the trees near a local village.
Firefighters, paramedics and police arrived on the scene, but they were unable to save the pilot of the balloon, who eventually died. The UK’s Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIB) has confirmed that it is already investigating the case.
The agency said in a statement quoted by Sky News: “AAIB received a report of an accident near Ombersley, Worcestershire this morning involving a balloon and we are dispatching a team to the scene.”
The accident happened the same weekend as the First Worcester Balloon Festival. The representative of the event assured that the accident had nothing to do with the festival. “The festival ended last night, it had nothing to do with the festival,” he said.
