The conservative New Democracy party won this Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Greece, with voters giving reformist Kyriakos Mitsotakis a second term as prime minister.
according to the channel Al Jazeeraofficial results of almost 90% of the vote across the country give Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s party over 40% of the vote, while its main rival, the left-wing SYRIZA party, suffered a crushing defeat with just under 18% of the vote.
“The people have given us a reliable majority. Big reforms will move forward quickly,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
According to the same source, forecasts indicated that New Democracy would win about 157 or 158 out of 300 seats in parliament thanks to an amendment to the electoral law that gives the winning party additional seats.
Sunday’s vote comes just over a week after a migrant ship sank off the west coast of Greece, leaving hundreds dead and missing, casting doubt on the actions of Greek authorities and the country’s strict migration policy.
