A janitor turned off a refrigerator in a laboratory at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York because he was disturbed by an alarm and ended up destroying decades of scientific work.
In accordance with new york post officethe cleaning lady ended up causing losses to the laboratory in the amount of at least one million dollars (about 915 thousand euros).
The employee was concerned about the refrigerator’s security alarm, which had a sign on the door explaining the source of the sound, as well as instructions on how to turn it off. “You can press and hold the alarm/test mute button for 5-10 seconds if you want to mute the sound,” it said. The waiter pressed the button and thought he was drowning out the noise, but ended up turning off the fridge.
The lab has already sued the cleaning company: “All this happened because of the behavior and negligence of people. Unfortunately, they erased 25 years of research,” said a lawyer representing the lab.
The lab’s storage refrigerator had cells and samples stored at -80 degrees Celsius and then steeled at -32 degrees, eventually damaging or destroying all of the material.
