The 16-year-old who killed his stepfather in Seixal in October with a precision stab wound to the chest — “perforated a lung and severed an aortic artery,” according to an autopsy — confessed to the crime in court this Thursday but said he acted in self-defense.
“Money and cigarettes disappeared from the room where my mother and I slept. I asked her if she knew why, but my stepfather jumped up and said that I should leave the house, he was fed up with me. He started pulling off my coat, but I pushed him away. He continued, knocked me to the ground and began to choke me. My mother and a neighbor took it off me and I ran to the kitchen,” Viselmo Santana said this Thursday in the Almada court. And he continued: “I took the knife that was in the sink and put it in my pants pocket. He came to the door and said that I was a burden, and today everything will end. I got scared and tried to run away, but he grabbed me again. I let go, left the house and started down the stairs. [do prédio]. But I tripped and fell. He came for me, hit me and grabbed my neck again. That’s when I took the knife out of my pocket. I stabbed him while he was choking me.”
Vicelmo also assured that he did not want to kill his stepfather João Nzinga and apologized to his family. This statement was later confirmed by a woman who at the time was renting a room in an apartment in Miratecho, Seixal, and who witnessed everything. “He’s a good boy,” Antonia Niala assured.
