The Assembly of the Republic this Friday rejected three bills from PSD, Chega and Iniciativa Liberal that proposed the distribution of free textbooks to students in private and cooperative sector educational institutions.
Only the support of the three proposing parties and the abstention of PAN received the diplomas, with votes against from PS, Bloco de Esquerda, PCP and Livre.
The issue already divided parliament on Wednesday when the initiatives were discussed: PSD, Chega and Iniciativa Liberal argued that the tip, which currently only applies to public schools, is discriminatory.
The parties also believed that the exclusion of students from colleges jeopardized the freedom of choice of families, and SDP MP Sonia Ramos even advocated that this choice should not only be respected, but also supported by the state.
On the left, PS, Bloco de Esquerda and Livre responded that the state is responsible for providing free and universal compulsory education and that it does so through the public sector, while the PCP accused supporters of hypocrisy for not compiling books. forms of support offered by the party are free of charge, but complained about private sector benefits.
PAN was the only one to approach the bills, with Inés de Souza Real emphasizing at the time that there are families in need who opt for private education but do not have free textbooks, and on the other hand, given that the measure could have an “important ecological character” due to the reuse of books.
