This Monday, the President of the Republic promulgated a decree-law on the creation of a permanent cadre of soldiers in the army and air force, introducing the third amendment to the Charter of the Armed Forces.
The introduction of this government diploma was announced through a note on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet without any remarks from the head of state and the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
This decree-law was approved by the Council of Ministers on May 11 and, according to the government, is designed to meet “the needs of recruitment and retention in the Armed Forces and the requirements of the professionalization of military service.”
“Currently, in the Army and the Air Force, military service in the category of privates is carried out mainly according to the contract regime, the maximum duration of which is six years, which does not fully meet the needs of the Armed Forces. forces,” the government said in a statement released at the time.
With the creation of a “headquarters with a permanent character in this category,” the executive intends to “increase the attractiveness of the Armed Forces and retention in the ranks; offer career prospects; create a priority source of recruitment for the category of sergeants; provide more stability in terms of human resources.”
According to the government, the change would also “harmonize the careers of the three branches of the service (the navy already has a permanent rank and file); increase the return on investment made by the Armed Forces with the training and qualifications of military personnel.” and “appreciate the military profession”.
