Captain Ferreira announces that he will miss the Defense Commission hearing.

Former Secretary of State Marco Capitau Ferreira announced on Tuesday that he will not attend Wednesday’s Parliamentary Defense Committee hearing, citing his current status as a defendant in the “Perfect Storm” process.

A parliamentary source told the Lusa news agency that the position of Marco Capitan Ferreira, who was relieved of his duties as defense minister last Friday, was communicated to members of the parliamentary committee by e-mail tonight.

“He says he will not be present at the hearing on Wednesday, arguing that he must now answer to justice,” the same source said.

Parliament last week granted Chega’s request to hear Marco Capitan Ferreira to clarify a consulting contract he signed with the Directorate General of National Defense Resources (DGRDN) prior to taking office as secretary of state.

This request was later approved, with PS abstaining. The same vote also approved a PSD request requesting documentation for this contract.

On Friday, President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa accepted the resignation of Marco Capitan Ferreira proposed by Prime Minister António Costa.

The former Minister of Defense was prosecuted in the “Perfect Storm” trial, which resulted in the judicial police raiding his home and the Ministry of Defense.

Marco Capitan Ferreira took over as Secretary of State for Defense when the current government took office on March 30, 2022.
