Prime Minister António Costa said this Wednesday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had misunderstood the Atlantic Alliance’s desire to one day accept the country as a member state.
“Of course, there was a moment of misunderstanding, since the statement is obviously the result of an existing invitation, and the general confirmation that Ukraine can become a member as soon as possible naturally implies an invitation,” António Costa told reporters at the end of the meeting. Summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Vilnius, Lithuania.
However, the prime minister noted that Ukraine’s accession to NATO would be possible only “when the conditions are met.”
