An investigation by the Judicial Police (PJ) and the Spanish National Police Corps against organized crime in relation to international drug trafficking led to the arrest of 21 people and the seizure of more than two tons of drugs.
According to a statement from the SP to the newsrooms, the arrested suspects belong to a “relevant criminal organization” involved in drug trafficking.
The investigation was based on an incident in September 2022, when a truck from Portugal was found in France containing about 458 kg of hashish. “This situation attracted the attention of the Judicial Police, who, through the Northern Directorate, initiated an investigation to understand the true extent of the criminal network and identify possible suspects in the country,” it says.
According to the joint venture, during the investigation, evidence was found of “the existence in our country of a criminal group that provided important drug trafficking networks created in Spain, a whole range of services for the transportation of drugs in large quantities to other countries in the center from Europe.”
After learning about how the network works, the Judicial Police shared information with the Spanish National Police Corps and requested surveillance of a truck leaving Portugal with legal goods heading to a warehouse in southern Spain.
The Spanish authorities escorted the vehicle and brought it under surveillance. The driver was arrested and several bales of hashish weighing over one ton were found.
“After a search in the warehouse where the heavy vehicle was located, new bales of cannabis resin were found and seized, again weighing more than a ton, as a result of which 14 people were detained at the place of detention,” explains the GP.
Confirming suspicions, the Judicial Police proceeded to conduct searches and arrests across the country, targeting the chief drug trafficker, in conjunction with the Republican National Guard, which was investigating some other suspects. . Six arrest warrants were executed.
Three suspects in the leadership of the network were present at the first judicial interrogation, to which a measure of restraint in the form of a preliminary detention was applied.
