Carlos Lopez Pires is the new Secretary of State for Defense. The swearing-in is scheduled for this Thursday.

The President of the Republic has accepted the proposal of the Prime Minister to appoint Carlos López Pires as the new Minister of Defense, who will take office on Thursday, the administration of the President of the Republic announced on Wednesday.

Carlos López Pires will replace Marco Capitan Ferreira, who resigned from government on July 7, the day he became an argument in the Perfect Storm trial.

“The President of the Republic has accepted the proposal of the Prime Minister to appoint Carlos Alberto Rajeb López Pires as the new Secretary of State for National Defense of the XXIII constitutional government de Belen,” reads a note issued by the administration of the President of the Republic.

A career diplomat, Carlos López Pires holds an MA in International Relations from the Graduate Institute of Social and Political Sciences of the Technical University of Lisbon and an MA in European Studies from the London School of Economics.

According to the Strategic Defense Information Service (SIED) website, Carlos López Pires has until now been the director of this service.

According to the syllabus available on the “website” of the Assembly of the Republic, Carlos López Pires was Assistant in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho from June 2011 to February 2013 and also served as Assistant in the Cabinet of the Minister of State and Luís Amado Foreign Affairs , from September 2010 to June 2011

Between 2013 and 2014, he also served as Chief of Staff to the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Rui Machete.

He served in DELNATO, the Portuguese Delegation to NATO, and was part of the Portuguese Embassies in Sao Tome, Cairo and Paris.

The new Minister of Defense was born on September 10, 1973 in Beirut.
