The BE coordinator today considered the results of the Spanish elections “bad news for the Portuguese right”, who were waiting for “the wind of the Spanish state to catch a ride”, hoping that a “democratic solution” would emerge from the negotiations.
During a press conference at the BE headquarters in Lisbon on measures for the SNS, Mariana Mortagua was asked about the results of Sunday’s elections in Spain.
“The best news of last night [domingo] is the crushing defeat of the far-right Vox and another, less mentioned fact, which is the disappearance of liberals from Spanish politics, namely Ciudadanos, who was a liberal force in the Spanish state,” he stressed.
For the BE leader, this is “good news for democracy” but “bad news for the Portuguese right, which, with no political program or alternative, has been waiting for the winds of the Spanish state to catch a ride.”
“We can only hope that negotiations between the various parties responsible for this and for finding a democratic solution will take place and that this democratic solution will be found,” he said.
Mariana Mortagua began by saying that on Sunday she had the opportunity to “personally greet Sumar through Yolanda Diaz, as well as all the forces of the left in Galicia, Catalonia and the Basque Country”, given that “it is these forces together that can prevent the emergence of a right-wing majority in the Spanish state.”
Sunday’s elections in Spain were inconclusive, with neither of the two major blocs winning an absolute majority.
According to preliminary results released by the government, the People’s Party (PP) conservatives won the election, but did not win an absolute majority with Vox.
PP with 136 MPs and Vox with 33 were only able to add 169 MPs to Parliament, leaving seven of the 176 needed for an absolute majority.
PSOE with 122 MPs and Sumar with 31 won a total of 153 parliamentary seats and may have more MPs than the allies of the last legislature.
