PSD leader Luis Montenegro said on Tuesday that he would only be able to govern Portugal if he won the elections, given the “anecdotal” criticism from the PS/Azores of his stance on the PP’s victory in Spain.
“I will only rule Portugal if I win the elections. I will only rule if I have the confidence of the people.
Montenegro has reacted to the PS/Azores, which in a statement released on Monday, believe that the SDP president “either has no memory or is not ashamed” of defending that the PN should form a government in Spain because it won the elections, recalling what happened during the 2020 regional elections.
“If this did not cause concern, it would be anecdotal,” the national leader said, noting that it is “a political party with its own regional structure that criticizes the position of the SDP leader.”
Luis Montenegro responded to PS/Azores, emphasizing respect for “regional autonomy in word and practice.”
“What is discussed and decided in the regions, from the point of view of autonomy, is the responsibility of those who politically govern the regions. But I do not propose to be the chairman of the regional government. I propose to be the Prime Minister of Portugal,” he stressed.
Montenegro also asked PS/Azores if it “remembers what happened in 2015 not from a regional perspective, but from a national perspective, when PS did exactly the opposite of what the regional structure is now criticizing.”
“The election campaign in the Azores will take place next year. The PS used Azorean weapons to try to criticize the position of the SDP leader,” he stressed.
The leader of the Social Democrats assured that he was “very calm and even very happy,” stressing that this gives him the opportunity to say that he “is for regional autonomies, but the PS is not.”
“I am for a national political power that is inspired by the trust of the Portuguese people, that respects fundamental democratic values, that governs those who have the trust of the people. The prime minister is the leader of the party with the most votes,” he said.
“This is how I will present myself to the Portuguese, without warmth, without ambiguity, in order to win the elections and get the conditions for governance,” he stressed.
