The river beaches of Argasos and Lumiar in Carres in Viana do Castelo have been banned from swimming since Wednesday due to poor water quality, the local port captain said on Thursday.
Contacting the Lusa agency, Captain Silva Lampreya said that the Argasos river beach, protected swimming area, and Lumiar beach (marine, uncontrolled) are not recommended for swimming from 10:00 on Wednesday.
The decision, formulated by the Delegate of Health, the Chamber of Viana do Castelo and the captain, came after regular analyzes of the river and sea waters of the municipality, which revealed a “parameter beyond quality” associated with the presence of the bacterium “E. coli”.
According to Captain Silva Lampreia, “both beaches are not marked with a blue flag.”
The person in charge added that in the case of the beach on the Argasos River, since it is under surveillance, a red flag was raised.
Signs have been placed on Lumiar Beach in Carreço forbidding swimming in the sea.
Captain Silva Lampreia added that “according to the information of the Chamber of Viana do Castelo, new water samples will be taken on the above-mentioned beaches today.”
“We are waiting for the results of new tests in order to resume the normal functioning of the bathing areas,” he said.
Lusa was contacted by environmental adviser of the Chamber of Viana do Castelo Fabiola Oliveira, explaining that new tests had already been carried out in the waters of two bathing areas, “but since they take a lot of time, only on Friday or even Monday will the results be known” .
