A total of 22 candidates were submitted to the National Electoral Commission of Mozambique (CNE) for the October 11 municipal elections, the electoral commission announced today.
CNE spokesman Paulo Quinica said that among the candidates presented, 11 represent political parties, three coalitions of political parties and eight constituencies.
The nomination process ran from July 20 to August 11, and 31 candidates expressed their intention to participate in the review, nine more than those who ultimately did so.
“Verification of candidates, document by document, will continue until the 16th day of the current month, after which the accepted and rejected candidates will be considered at the plenary meeting of the National Electoral Commission,” he added.
From the 18th to the 20th of this month, persons who put forward proposals with rejected candidates will file complaints with the CNE, and from the 21st to 23rd there will be an appeal period to the Constitutional Council against the decision to reject the candidates and related lists.
“At the end of this period, the CNE will publish the final lists for election for each constituency through a public notice published in Boletim da República and in the media, as well as notices from representatives of supporters,” stressed Paulo Quinica.
Then, in the presence of candidates or proxies, final lists will be drawn up to fix the order on the ballot papers, as well as airtime on state audiovisual and broadcasting stations, he added.
More than 8.7 million Mozambican voters have registered to vote in the sixth municipal election, according to CNE data, down from the original forecast of 9.8 million voters.
On October 11, Mozambican voters will elect 65 new mayors, including 12 new municipalities that will join the 53 existing ones.
In the 2018 municipal elections, Frelimo won 44 out of 53 municipalities, while the opposition won only nine, Renamo won eight, and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), a third party, won one.
