PS claims to be the only party able to “concretely change” in Madeira.

The head of the PS list in Madeira’s legislative elections, Sergio Gonçalves, said on Monday that the party is “mobilized” and intends to achieve an “excellent result”, stressing that it is the only one capable of “implementing change” in the archipelago.

“The PS vote is the only vote that effectively allows this change to be implemented, and the people of Madeira will have to make a choice between those who want to lower taxes or those who want to maintain the current state of affairs,” the candidate said.

Sergio Gonçalves, who is also the head of the regional structure of the PS and a member of the Legislative Assembly, spoke to journalists at the door of the Funchal court after the list of candidates for the regional legislative elections on September 24 was handed over.

“This is a list of competent people capable of bringing about the change that Madeira so desires,” he said, stressing that “the party is mobilized to achieve an excellent result.”

Sancha Campanella, an independent candidate, is second on the list of PS, Madeira’s largest opposition party, followed by Rui Cayetano, current leader of the parliamentary group in the Legislative Assembly.

Of the 47 names that make up the list of incumbent candidates, more than half (27) are new compared to the list presented in the last regional elections in 2019, with a total of 94 candidates (incumbent and alternates), 50% male and 50% women.

“This is a list that allows the people of Madeira to look confidently into the future with hope for a better future,” said Sergio Gonçalves, emphasizing that the goal is to “create a Madeira of opportunity from which young people do not emigrate due to lack of work or low wage”.

The Socialist leader stressed that on September 24, Madeirans will choose between the PS, which “wants to value work, wages and increase incomes”, and the PSD, with a policy of “public spending and inventions”.

In the regional elections on September 22, 2019, the PSD lost its absolute majority in the Madeira Regional Legislative Assembly, which it had held since 1976, and formed a coalition government with the CDU-PP (three deputies).

In this electoral act, the PS elected 19 deputies, the JPP three and the PCP one.
