President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is due to visit Ukraine from Tuesday to Friday, according to a request for permission sent to Parliament.
The request came from Warsaw, where the head of state is currently on an official visit that began on Monday and ended on Tuesday.
At the end of that visit, to a question from RTP and Antena 1, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza only replied that the Assembly of the Republic had authorized “a possible trip to Ukraine.”
“I asked, and it was allowed, the President of the Assembly of the Republic heard the leaders of the parliament and individual deputies, and therefore we are in this phase, and now we will see the development of events,” he said.
Rejecting that he was worried about the exposure on the website of the Assembly of the Republic, the head of state explained that the Parliament “first published a request” and “then, after receiving it, permission”, as is usually the case.
“Usually, the Assembly of the Republic does this, and therefore it should have done this as part of the general line,” he added.
When asked if he intended to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during this possible trip to Ukraine, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza replied only: “We’ll see.”
In a reply sent to the Lusa news agency in the meantime, an official source from the office of Augusto Santos Silva explained that “as is usually the case in such circumstances, the President of the Assembly of the Republic consulted with all parliamentary groups and individual deputies, as well as with the president. Committee for Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities”.
“[foi] It was confirmed that the possible trip of His Excellency the President of the Republic to Ukraine will receive broad support in the Verkhovna Rada after the formal ratification of the travel permit in the Standing Committee, which will take place on September 6,” he added.
