India made history by landing on the moon on Wednesday.
The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has landed at the south pole of the moon, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said. It was India’s third attempt to land a spacecraft on the Moon and came less than a week after the failure of Russia’s Luna 25 mission.
Chandrayan means “moon ship” in Hindi and Sanskrit. In 2019, ISRO’s Chandrayaan-2 mission successfully launched an orbiter, but its lander crashed.
This Wednesday, ISRO said it is ready to activate the spacecraft’s automatic landing sequence, triggering an algorithm that will take control when it reaches its assigned position, helping it land.
Chandrayaan-3 is expected to be operational for two weeks, after conducting a series of tests, including a spectrometric analysis of the mineral composition of the lunar surface.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi watched the moment in South Africa, where he is participating in the BRICS summit, and called the day India became the first country to place a probe on the surface of the moon near the south pole “a historic day.”
Four years after the failed attempt, India has joined a very limited club of great space powers (USA, Russia and China) that have reached the surface of the Moon.
