Chega will call a new national convention after the Constitutional Court invalidated the call for the last major rally, and Andre Ventura will be the party’s re-election candidate.
At a press conference at Chega’s national headquarters in Lisbon, the party’s president stated that the National Directorate “has unanimously decided to start the necessary procedures for holding the sixth congress.”
“Because I do not leave the ship in the middle of the voyage, and because I understand that I continue to meet the conditions of trust that the militants attributed to me, I will again be a candidate for the presidency of Chega,” Andre Ventura said. urging critics to enter the race and submit nominations.
The leader of “Chegi” noted that this would be the sixth major meeting of “Chegi” in five years after the decision of the Constitutional Court (CC), and stressed that the party “did its best to fulfill the requirements of the CC.”
Ventura strongly criticized the actions of the judges of the Constitutional Court, whom he accused of “bad faith” and of being a “blocking force”, and also spoke about the “harassment”, “boycott” and an attempt to “illegalize the secretariat”. “.
“Never before has a political party been subjected to such persecution in court since April 25, and we cannot believe that the judges appointed by the PS and the PSD contribute to the permanent strangulation and covert illegalization of their opponent,” he accused.
President Chegi said a date for the congress has not yet been set, but acknowledged that it could take place later this year, indicating that the party wants to “solve the problem as quickly as possible.”
André Ventura said that the National Council – the highest body between congresses that will decide on the convening of the congress – is now regular because “it has the composition determined by the 2019 charter.”
Among the arguments in favor of invalidating the call for the last congress, the Labor Code argued that the National Council that convened it “had a composition that violated” Chega’s charter that was in force at that time (since 2019).
Ventura noted that “people are not the same anymore” and criticized TC for not specifying how this and other issues are “resolved”.
“TC never clearly understands the consequences of their decisions,” he lamented, noting that “this is not a legal issue, but a political one.”
Asked if the congress would also serve to change the bylaws as Chega returned to pass the first statutes after another TC decision that “failed” those who left the Viseu congress in 2021, André Ventura acknowledged the possibility but stated that “The most natural thing to avoid new blockades is no.”
Andre Ventura said that despite “vehemently disagreeing” with the decision of the TC, he would have to respect it, but admitted that he had filed complaints with European bodies.
Regarding the possibility that Chega’s candidacy in the Madeira regional legislative elections in September is in jeopardy, the President said that “if the TC decides that the list cannot be delivered to the elections, democracy is at stake.”
At this press conference, President Chegi also wanted to comment on the visit of the president of the republic to Ukraine, pointing out that the party “given the go-ahead for this trip”, with which we “completely agree.”
“Portugal is helping Ukraine, we must continue to do so despite all the risks,” he defended, saying he hoped “the Portuguese state will continue its efforts, within its capabilities, to help Ukraine emerge victorious.”
André Ventura also criticized the PKP, deeming it “shameful that there are parties that understand that Portugal should not be on the side of Ukraine and that the President of the Republic should not go to Kiev.”
The leader of Chegi was also asked about the investigation that the prosecutor’s office launched after the publication of false news on his social networks using graphics identical to media images, but he refused to answer.
The TC confirmed the decision to invalidate the call to the 5th Cheg Congress and noted that the validity of the actions taken at the Magna meeting “is an issue that complicates” this process.
In a decision posted on its website on Thursday, the TC dismissed Chega’s appeal and upheld the July 11 decision to invalidate the appeal of the Fifth Party Congress, as well as the approval of the electoral and working regulations of this large meeting. , which took place from 27 to 29 January in Santarem.
This decision was made after a challenge filed by militant number 3 Chegi Fernando Marquez López.
