At least 13 people died this Friday in Madagascar as a result of a stampede at the entrance to the Barea stadium in Antananarivo ahead of the opening ceremony of the Indian Ocean Games.
The latest balance sheet, still preliminary, indicates 13 deaths, including seven minors, and 107 injuries in incidents that occurred at the Barea Stadium, where more than 50,000 people intended to attend the ceremony.
Speaking on a Madagascar radio station, MP Khanitra Razafimanantsoa raised the estimate previously made by Prime Minister Christian Nzai of 12 dead and 80 injured outside a hospital in the country’s capital.
The local Red Cross says seven minors, two boys and five girls, and a dozen more are in serious condition, among the local victims, so the death toll could rise.
In the first list of victims, the age is from five to 70 years, a large number of teenagers.
At the stadium, the President of the country, Andri Rajuelina, asked for a moment of silence and said: “We are 50,000 people in the stadium, but a tragic event happened, as there was a riot, as a result of which there were dead and wounded at the entrance. .”
