“We had 748 harvests on Wednesday and 813 on Thursday. It was a good response from the Portuguese,” says Maria Antonia Escoval, president of IPST. Despite this reaction, there is still a shortage of blood and summer is a critical time as the number of donors decreases due to the holidays.
“These were two exceptional days when there was a very big wave of solidarity, but it is still not enough to restore the required level,” says Alberto Mota, President of FEPODABES. Stationary collection points exist in Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon.
“A reality that needs to be changed to prevent blood supplies from reaching such alarming levels. There must be a different strategy, because there are many things not covered in the country, like in the Algarve, for example,” says Alberto Mota.
