The Parliaments of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) want more women and young people to hold public office and in politics, the organization’s president said this Sunday at a Portuguese-speaking bloc summit in Sao Tome.
According to Ecuadorian-Guinean Teresa Efua Asangono, this was one of the recommendations of the CPLP Parliamentary Assembly (AP-CPLP) held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea in July, where she was elected president of the body.
“Youth policy and gender equality are at the heart of our community and have once again been strongly promoted with a recommendation to continue to help increase the number of women and youth in government positions and encourage their greater participation in active political life,” he said. emphasized in his speech.
Teresa Efua Asangono, who is also President of the Senate of Equatorial Guinea, noted that the AP-CPLP “has welcomed the high level of civility and democratic maturity seen in all of its member states that have recently held elections”, which they see as a manifestation of the results of “efforts and advisory presence of the CPLP”.
In this sense, the AP-CPLP recommends “increased participation of the organization in all electoral processes” in the Portuguese-speaking community and wants to “see increased participation of the CPLP in election observation missions in Member States that require it”.
Regarding the functioning of the AP-CPLP, Teresa Efua Asangono highlighted the “remarkable achievements of the CPLP” which allowed “the establishment of standing commissions” at the level of the Parliamentary Assembly “to enable the organization to monitor the implementation of major measures taken by heads of state”.
The CPLP, which includes Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor-Leste, is holding the 14th Conference of Heads of State and Government in Sao Tome this Sunday and Principe. under the motto “Youth and sustainable development”.
