Angolan President guarantees that the issue of ‘reparations’ was ‘never raised’

Angolan President João Lourenço said Tuesday that Luanda “never put” the issue of historical reparations on the negotiating table because “many things would have to change” and the colonial powers would not be able to pay “a fair price” for repairs. The statement was made at a joint press conference with Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, who is on an official visit to Angola until Thursday.

The topic of historical reparations was launched by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who in April declared that our country should lead the process of taking on and eliminating the consequences of the colonial period, and suggested debt forgiveness, cooperation and financing as an example. Something that divides Portuguese society.

On the first day of his official visit to Angola, Luis Montenegro announced the strengthening of the credit line supported by Portugal for investments in Angola by an additional 500 million euros in addition to the current two billion euros, and intended to provide a “new big impetus” to relations between the two countries.

On the other hand, the Portuguese Prime Minister suggested that citizens of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) have a “preferential gate” to enter Portugal. “Portuguese-speaking countries and their citizens, in terms of our migration policy, have a preferential gate” for “cultural, historical, linguistic and shared values.”

Asked about visas to enter Portugal, Luis Montenegro highlighted the fact that Angola was “the second country that requested the highest number of CPLP visas” with “an approval rate of 89%.
