Russia evacuated more than 1,000 Ukrainian children from Mariupol

More than a thousand Ukrainian children were taken to Russia by Russian authorities from Mariupol, a city in southeastern Ukraine that was destroyed and occupied by the Russian invasion in 2022, according to figures released this Monday by a non-governmental organization (NGO).

Such data was provided by the lawyer of the Kharkiv human rights group Mykola Komarovsky during the filing of a petition to the International Criminal Court (ICC) about the genocide of people in Mariupol during the Russian invasion, at the center of a press release from the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.

“In relation to this petition, all data on the deportation of children are taken from open sources. At the moment, it is difficult to give an exact number, because, based on some publications, [nos meios de comunicação social russos], we are talking about more than a thousand children. However, it is very difficult to give an exact figure for Mariupol. But we are aware of such cases,” said a representative of the Kharkiv Group, one of the oldest human rights organizations in Ukraine.
