White House suggests Kremlin may be behind Prigozhin’s death

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre suggested on Tuesday that the Kremlin may be responsible for the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group, Reuters reported.

“We all know that the Kremlin has a long history of killing opponents,” said Karine Jean-Pierre. “It’s very clear what happened here.”

According to Reuters, the comment was the closest U.S. statement to date to the possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the assassination of Prigozhin after he put Russia on a red alert by declaring a rebellion against the country and, more specifically, the Ministry of Protection.

US President Joe Biden said this Wednesday that he was not surprised by the possible death of the leader of the Wagner mercenary group in a plane crash in Russia.

“I still don’t know exactly what happened, but I’m not surprised. Little happens in Russia without Putin’s participation,” the US head of state said in statements during his vacation on Lake Tahoe, located between Nevada and California.
