Andre Ventura this Wednesday urged the SDP to add signatures to Chega’s signatures to be able to move forward with the request for a consistent review of the constitutionality of the norms of the drug amending diploma.
“We have written to the PSD to join Chega in asking for a consistent abstract review,” Andre Ventura said at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Lisbon.
Leader Chegi said the goal is to ask the Constitutional Court (CC) to rule on the content of the law, after the CC upheld on Tuesday the constitutionality of a parliamentary ruling decriminalizing synthetic drugs and making a new distinction between trade and consumption.
An abstract verification of the constitutionality of the law may be demanded by a tenth of the deputies of the Assembly of the Republic, that is, 23. There are 12 people in the Chega collegium, so the party cannot do it alone.
The President of the Republic sent the diploma to the TC, citing the “lack of consultation” with the authorities of the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores.
Chega voiced criticism of the diploma, believing that “it is unlikely to bring anything positive to the country” and that it will make it more difficult to fight drug trafficking, and stated that Marcelo Rebelo de Souza should have asked for the content of the diploma to be checked. the diploma is approved by parliament, not by “formalities”.
André Ventura stated that he “still today will be able to talk” directly with SDP chairman Luis Montenegro about this request.
Leader Chegi also called on the head of state to “veto this law politically”, stating that “it should not come into force”, stating that “it will harm young people and families.”
After the decision of the Labor Code became known, the president of the republic announced that he would publish the diploma.
