On Thursday, the PCP announced that it would submit an initiative to the Assembly of the Republic to cap rent growth to 0.43% after the National Institute of Statistics (INE) estimated the increase at 6.94%.
“In a situation of ever-increasing prices for essential goods and services, PKP believes that updating the cost of rent – for current contracts and those that may be extended or concluded with other tenants – cannot exceed the limit set for 2022. (the year in which inflation soared), i.e. 0.43%,” the party’s statement defends.
In the note, the PKP adds that it will present “in the first days of its work in the Assembly of the Republic, a legislative initiative to express this proposal”.
The Communists cite information released this Wednesday by the INE that the cost of rent could increase by 6.94% next year if the government does not impose, as it did this year, a cap on renovations.
The PCP warns that this increase “will further exacerbate the difficulty of accessing housing in a country whose population is facing a sharp increase in the cost of rent and home loans.”
With regard to inflation, the Communists note that “in August, the cycle of slowing down homologous inflation, which has been observed since November last year, is now interrupted,” since, according to INE, “annual inflation was 3.7% (there is still a chain an increase of 0.3% compared to July.”
“Moreover, it confirms a steady and prolonged rise in prices, which corrodes the living conditions of workers and the population and turns the increase in wages and pensions into a state of emergency of the country,” the party emphasizes.
