It is raining with hail in Serra da Estrela. Civil Defense calls for preventive measures in the face of deteriorating weather

Heavy rain and hail are already being felt in Serra da Estrela and Fundão. It was on this Saturday that Civil Protection appealed to the population to take preventive measures in connection with weather changes, from the interior of the country to the coast, with a forecast of precipitation, sometimes heavy, accompanied by hail, thunder and gusts of wind.

In a statement, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANPC) adds that, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), “a gradual change in the situation is expected from noon, September 2.” meteorological conditions, with precipitation, sometimes heavy, accompanied by hail, thunder and convective gusts, especially on the 2nd and 3rd days.

According to the ANPC, typical episodes of transitional seasons with the first rains contribute to “the occurrence of urban flooding caused by the accumulation of rainwater due to clogged drainage systems.”

In addition, according to the agency, it is possible “the occurrence of floods, potentiated by the overflow of the channel of certain watercourses, rivers and streams,” as well as landslides and landslides, “motivated by water seepage – a phenomenon that can be exacerbated by the removal of vegetation as a result of rural fires or artificial soil “.

Civil Protection reminds that these possible consequences can be minimized, first of all, by adopting appropriate behavior, therefore, especially in historically more vulnerable areas, the adoption of basic preventive measures is recommended.

In this way, the authorities are calling for guarantees “cleaning rainwater drainage systems and removing aggregates and other objects that may stretch or obstruct the free flow of water.”

The ANPC also calls for “special caution” when moving and staying near forested areas, paying attention to the possibility of falling branches and trees due to high winds.

Circulation along coastlines and coastal areas “historically more vulnerable to overflow” should also be taken into account, avoiding circulation and permanent residence in these areas.

The authorities also urge not to engage in activities related to the sea, namely sport fishing, water sports and walks on the sea, as well as to avoid parking vehicles very close to the embankment.

Civil Protection is also calling for a shift to safe driving at reduced speeds and avoiding crossing flooded areas to prevent people or vehicles from being drawn into pavement holes or open sewers.

This Saturday, IPMA placed ten areas in mainland Portugal under a yellow warning level due to the forecast for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

According to IPMA, the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Vila Real, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Portalegre, Évora, Beja and Faro have a yellow warning today from 09:00 to 21:00.

On Sunday, the IPMA also placed on yellow warning the districts of Leiria, Lisbon, Santarém and Setúbal, which join Viseu, Guarda, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, Beja and Faro.

The yellow warning will be in effect from 09:00 to 18:00, including in connection with the forecast of showers, sometimes heavy, and sometimes hail, accompanied by strong gusts of wind, as well as thunderstorms, frequent and scattered.
