Marcelo is more concerned about European elections than his successor

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, showed this Saturday that he is more concerned about next year’s European elections than his successor in 2026.

Asked by reporters about the possibility of UN Secretary-General António Guterres running for President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said he was more concerned, “certainly”, with the European elections because they would serve to measure the “pulse of Europe”.

“Populism is growing, isn’t it? Will the ruling parties be able to resist this or not? The more Europeanist parties will be able to resist this, or not? This is more important,” the president of the republic stressed in an address to journalists in São João da. Pesqueira, where Windorou visited.

After the European elections, the most important are “regional elections and local elections” because “local government is the foundation of democracy,” he added.

As for the legislature, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza stated that “in principle” they would no longer be part of his mandate.

“No one wants to wait for legislative elections, they are scheduled for the end of 2026,” he added.
