Serbian basketball player Borisa Shimanic lost one of his kidneys as a result of an injury sustained in a World Cup match against South Sudan.
After the incident on the field, the athlete was operated on in Manila, but there were additional complications that forced a second operation on Sunday, during which the kidney was removed.
“It was very hard for us when we found out what happened. We didn’t sleep after that game. We tried to find blood for him because he was losing a lot of blood. It was a really difficult time for everyone. I hope this will never happen again with anyone,” said fellow basketball player Nikola Milutinov.
The move came less than two minutes before Serbia’s triumph over South Sudan, with Simanic receiving an elbow from Nuni Omot, who was assured he didn’t mean to hurt his opponent when he tried to score under the basket, and the Serb yelled ‘pain’. and fell to his knees.
“At first we didn’t believe it was that bad. We prayed that he would recover as soon as possible,” Milutinov added after practice on Monday.
The environment still does not know when their player will be discharged from the hospital.
Šimanić played a total of about 20 minutes in three World Cup matches, scoring three points.
On Tuesday, Serbia will face Lithuania in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
