Arsonist who set dozens of fires in Ponte da Barca taken into custody

The 28-year-old arsonist, who was arrested last week and released due to a bailiffs’ strike, was arrested again this Wednesday afternoon by Braga judicial police and presented to a judge. The man is already in custody.

José Miguel Araujo is suspected of starting dozens of fires in the municipality of Ponte da Barca.

An on-duty criminal investigating judge on Friday ordered the detainee’s release because a strike by court officials prevented the conditions for a first judicial interrogation.

The defendant was released only with the establishment of a period for establishing his identity and place of residence. José Miguel Araujo has no criminal record and is the prime suspect in starting at least 20 fires that destroyed 120 hectares of forest between April and August 28 this year in the area between Ponte da Barca and Lindoso.
