Bloco de Esquerda (BE) coordinator Mariana Mortagua said Thursday that affordable student housing must be found immediately, suggesting that the state make available public buildings and request some of the housing allocated for tourism.
“We need to find housing that will be available immediately. It is obvious that dormitories need to be built, but students who are studying in higher education today, students who need an answer today, cannot wait until 2025 to get housing. this will happen when they finish their course,” he said.
Leaving the meeting with the Academic Association of Coimbra, which aimed to solve the problem of the lack of dormitories for students in the current academic year, Mariana Mortagua emphasized that “emergencies require an urgent response.”
“Now, in October, students who are homeless need an answer, and therefore Bloco de Esquerda presents the project [de lei] state of emergency, so that the state immediately provides public buildings that can now accommodate young people,” he said.
The blogger gave journalists several examples of public buildings that could serve as student dormitories, including the barracks of the Ministry of Defense.
“They are ready and able to provide necessary housing at controlled prices in an emergency to students who do not have access to housing,” he added.
Another of his proposed solutions to the problem of student accommodation in the event of a shortage of public buildings is the requisition of buildings reserved for tourism.
“If the requisition of public buildings is not enough, then it is necessary to restore the proposal that was put into practice during the pandemic and which is related to the requisition of buildings that are currently intended for tourism. .local housing, or hotels, namely large areas and the ability to allocate part of this availability to student housing, which the government pays at a protocol price and makes these rooms available at an affordable price,” he stressed.
In his opinion, this is an emergency response to the “solution to the urgent problem” of finding “a room and a home for thousands of university students who are on the verge of dropping out of college or living in unworthy conditions to be able to go to university.”
According to Mariana Mortagua, the number of rooms available to university students has decreased by 68% from 2021 to the present.
“It also means that prices for the few available rooms have gone up significantly. And we are talking about 300 or 400 euros on average, which makes it unbearable for a family today to send a son or daughter to university.” “, he concluded.
