João Gomes Cravinho, Minister of Foreign Affairs, confirmed this Saturday that the Portuguese father and minor daughter injured in the earthquake of 6.9 on the Richter scale registered this Friday evening in Morocco are “out of danger.” The shock killed at least 1,305 people and injured more than 1,800.
The minister also said that 75 Portuguese citizens currently in Morocco want to return to Portugal. This Saturday, an Air Force plane took off towards Marrakesh to return today with “the first group of Portuguese requested to remove support from the territory” if “all conditions are met,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Portuguese citizens wishing to return to their country should contact the Consular Emergency Section or the Portuguese Embassy in Rabat.
“I have been in contact with the Minister of Internal Administration (MAI), who is preparing various civil protection groups to be ready to go on the ground as soon as there is an official request from the Moroccan authorities,” said João Craviño.
The Foreign Minister advises citizens not to travel to Marrakesh in the coming days.
