The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Saturday classified disagreements with the Prime Minister as “normal for eight years”, considering that they arise from the functioning of democracy.
“There has never been a disagreement that is not the normal functioning of democracy, these are normal disagreements that have been happening for eight years,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said.
The head of state spoke to journalists in Monte Sobral in Alcazovas, the parish of Alentejo where the “Captains of Abril” first met 50 years ago, after being asked about the renewed rapprochement between Belém and São Bento.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa took part this Saturday, together with Prime Minister António Costa, in a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Captains’ Movement.
The head of state said that “institutionally, the Portuguese state is united.”
Speaking specifically about Portugal’s support for Morocco, which was rocked by an earthquake on Friday that left hundreds of people dead and injured, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that Portugal “in foreign policy, as in domestic policy, is fundamentally exemplary” and that “convergence and efficiency are absolute.”
